2014 Winter After-School Employment Applications Available January 13 – January 17

Mount Vernon, NY, December 24, 2013 – The Mount Vernon Youth Bureau wants to help young people get off to a great start for the new year. The agency will be offering 2014 Winter After-School Employment applications to youth aged 14 – 19 from Monday, January 13th – Friday, January 17th at the following locations:

City Hall Youth Bureau –3rd Floor, Room 307 (3:00 pm – 4:00 pm)
MV STRONG Program – MVHS, Room 237
WWDAY Program — Thornton High School, Room LL21
Mandela High School – Cafeteria Room (11:00 am – 12:00 noon)
A.B. Davis Middle School – Guidance Office, Main Office
Longfellow Middle School – Guidance Office, Room 320

“We want to encourage young people who attending school to pick up an application and return it by the deadline date in order to be considered for after school employment possibilities,” said Mayor Ernest D. Davis. “We know that when youth are provided with transferable skills and meaningful introductions to responsibility, punctuality and teamwork they acquire positive work ethics early and are more inclined to be successful.”

Applying youth must be Mount Vernon residents in order to be considered for the 2014 Winter After-school Employment. Submission of an application does not guarantee eligibility or employment into the program. The selection process is very competitive so please ensure to submit all documents in a timely fashion.

Applications must be returned to the Youth Bureau, Room 308 on the 3rd floor of City Hall, One Roosevelt Square. Applications will only be accepted from 3-4 pm beginning Monday, January 27th and ending on Thursday, January 30th, 2014. Absolutely no applications will be accepted prior to or after these dates.

Applications will also be made available on the Youth Bureau’s website and on the city’s website beginning Monday, January 13th – Thursday, January 30th, 2014.

“The goal of the program is to develop 21st Century youth competencies related to the workplace. Through paid work experiences, participants will learn to connect the basic skills that have been acquired in school to the soft skills that are learned in the workplace,” said DaMia Harris, Executive Director of the Mount Vernon Youth Bureau. “Our training for young people basically begins during the application stage for all youth seeking employment.”
