Mount Vernon, NY * July 30, 2014 – The Safe Haven Summer Day Program got off to a great start on July 7th. This program was established by the Mount Vernon Youth Bureau to provide a safe and exciting place for Mount Vernon youth ages 6-12 to participate in educational and recreational activities.
“The Youth Bureau has designed a fun filled summer experience for campers,” said Mayor Ernest D. Davis. “It’s great that our young people can experience so many activities before heading back to school in the fall.”
Campers days are filled with fun and meaningful activities with youth being exposed to Science, Technology, English and Mathematics (STEM) projects and field trips. Some activities have included exciting engineering projects with Bricks4Kids, S.T.E.M workshops with the Girl Scouts, fitness and nutrition, art, hip hop and sports clinics. To date campers have gone to the movies, bowling, Sportstime USA for rock climbing and lazar tag. Splash Down Water Park in Fishkill has been a favorite among campers and excitement loom for a trip to Lake Compounce.
“The Safe Haven Camp has operated safely and effectively for over a decade. Parents look forward to this program because it is affordable and fun. The staff consists of professional and caring adults who return each summer,” stated DaMia Harris, Executive Director.
This program’s low fee of $400.00 is a result of the generous support that is provided by Westchester County Legislator Lyndon Williams-13th District, the Westchester County Youth Bureau and the Mount Vernon City School District.
